Rothar is a social enterprise based in Phibsboro and began actively trading in August 2009. We use bikes to tackle environmental, social & economic challenges in Dublin. Rothar creates local solutions to global issues through the promotion of sustainable urban transport with cycling. Creation of employment and training opportunities for marginalised individuals is integrated into the heart of the enterprise.
The notion of social change is integral to Rothar’s philosophy: everyone has potential that needs to be tapped into and developed. Training people who, for one reason or another, are away from the job market can make a real difference by providing them opportunities and giving them a sense of ownership and respect towards their community, leading to a more peaceful and fair society. By helping us and shopping at Rothar, you help us creating more jobs, more training and a more sustainable city.
There is something essential for Rothar about the idea of social change: everyone has a potential that needs to be revealed and developed. Training people who, for one reason or another, are away from the job market can contribute to making a difference and providing them opportunities gives them a sense of ownership and respect towards their community, leading to a more peaceful and fair society. By helping and shop at Rothar, you help us creating more jobs, more training and a more sustainable city.
Rather than maximizing shareholder value, the primary aim of social enterprises is to generate profit to further a social and/or environmental goal. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways and depends on the structure of the social enterprise. Moreover, a business can accomplish its social aim through its operation by employing individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Rothar operates at two different levels: its environmental mission is accomplished through bicycle recycling and diversion of waste from landfill and aims to create training and job opportunities as the business develops. In other words, when you shop at Rothar, you participate in an environmental initiative but also a social one, as the money will be used to train young people, ex-offenders or any other people from disadvantaged backgrounds! Your money will always be reinvested in our mission: providing sustainable transport and help the people in need.
