Rothar is pleased to announce that this January we are opening our dedicated training centre in our expanded second premises in Bethesda Place, Dublin 1. This is the first step towards one of Rothar's long-term goals - to become Ireland's first first accredited bicycle mechanic training centre. Whether you're handy with a cone spanner, or you've never even fixed a puncture, Rothar is providing the best way to learn more.
Students are encouraged to bring their own bicycle to work on in the maintenance classes.
Our Beginner level maintenance class will involve:
Learning the names and functions of parts on different types of bicycles.
Basic maintenance - what to clean, what to lubricate
Punctures - removal, repair and wheel alignment
Pre-ride safety check - brakes, tyre pressure and bolt connections
Minor brake and gear adjustments - tighten brakes and stop those squeaks and clicks
Comfort adjustments - adjusting saddle and handlebar height and alignment to suit you
Duration: 4 hours
Cost: 40 Euro
Our Intermediate level class will involve:
All of the above (reminder) +
Brake servicing - replacing cables and pads and setting V, calliper and cantilever brakes (road and MTB levers)
Gear servicing - replacing cables and setting front and rear dérailleurs - different gear shifters
Chain and gear block replacement - using chain tool and split link, threaded and non-threaded
blocks
Crank and pedal replacement
Our Advanced level class will involve:
All of the above (reminder) +
Bottom Bracket servicing
Headset servicing
Wheel axle servicing
This course is designed for people who already have knowledge about bike mechanics. You need to know how to build a bike before signing up as the tutor will assist you and will not build the bike for you. We strongly recommend you take the “build your own bike” class if you have only basic knowledge in bike mechanics.
Our fixie/single-speed building workshop will teach you how to:
Pick a suitable frame - with advice on how to repaint it
Assemble frame and fork - installing bottom bracket and headset
Choose appropriate tooth ratio - chainring and sprocket
Attach both freewheel and fixed gear sprockets - flip-flop hub wheels
Correctly set chain tension - track dropouts, standard dropouts and hanging tensioners
Duration: 5 hours
Cost: 60 Euro
You will have the option of bringing your own frame or take one of ours and leave with the bike you have built yourself! We will charge for any part you will use for this bike.
The build-your-own-bike evening course will teach students:
-The differences between and advantages of racing, touring, mountain, hybrid and commuter bicycles - and to choose which they want to build.
-How to build a bicycle from the frame and forks up a complete bike - installing bottom bracket, headset, cranks, handlebars, brakes, gears, levers, wheels, cables chain etc.
-How to properly set and adjust the brakes and gears.
-How to safely attach accessories such as locks, lights, carriers and mudguards General maintenance tips to keep the bike running smoothly.
Students are encouraged to bring their own bicycle to work on in the maintenance classes, and will have to option of buying the wheel or bike they build themselves in the wheel building, fixie/single-
speed and build-your-own-bike classes.
The wheel building class will teach you:
How to assemble a wheel from spokes, hub and rim Different spoke patterns
How to dish and true the finished wheel
BUILD YOUR OWN BIKE CLASS (16 HOURS)
The build-your-own-bike evening course will teach students:
The differences between and advantages of racing, touring, mountain, hybrid and commuter bicycles - and to choose which they want to build
How to build a bicycle from the frame and forks up a complete bike
- installing bottom bracket, headset, cranks, handlebars, brakes, gears, levers, wheels, cables chain etc.
